History of Zwartz

A Legacy of Expertise

Zwartz has been an integral part of Oldenzaal since its founding in 1835, making it the oldest company in the region. Currently led by Ronald Zwartz, the fifth generation of the family, the company remains a vital piece of Oldenzaal’s industrial heritage. In 1927, Zwartz expanded by acquiring 600m² along the railroad, allowing for efficient distribution of goods. Today, the factory continues to operate with advanced weaving processes that ensure high-quality products.

Pivotal decisions

Zwartz has faced and overcome challenges in the ever-changing textile industry. One pivotal moment came in 1860 when the second generation shifted focus to jute weaving. Unlike many competitors who concentrated on producing sacks, Zwartz specialized in smaller, high-quality series, helping the company survive when other jute weavers in Europe disappeared. The jute used by Zwartz today is of superior quality and is free from the typical odor associated with jute.

Resilience through History

During World War II, the Zwartz family, being Jewish, faced significant hardships. The business was taken over by a German who ensured that the factory remained operational and provided jobs to prevent workers from being sent to Germany. This difficult period in the company’s history is a testament to its resilience and the dedication of those who worked to protect it.

Reversing trends

circularity

Natural fibres instead of synthetics

Zwartz has always specialized in weaving jute and other natural fabrics. Even when synthetic materials became popular, Zwartz stayed true to natural textiles, a decision that has paid off as the demand for sustainable materials has grown. Today, Zwartz continues to offer eco-friendly solutions, drawing on its long-standing expertise in natural fibers.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Production

Zwartz leads the way in ecological textile production, using natural fibers and advanced techniques to create sustainable products that are kind to the planet.
