Textile expert Karst Jan explains: Geotextile and the environment

In a world where sustainability is becoming increasingly important, demand for eco‑friendly alternatives to synthetic materials is growing. Even within the textile sector, we are looking for solutions with minimal environmental impact.

Since 1835 Zwartz has developed textiles based on natural fibres. We now offer a range of natural geotextile qualities that meet technical requirements and support a healthier environment. Our textile expert Karst Jan explains how natural geotextile works and what role natural materials can play.

What are natural geotextiles?

Geotextile is a type of fabric used in ground, water and road construction. It serves various functions, including:

  • Soil stabilisation
  • Separation of different soil layers
  • Sludge and sediment management
  • Applications in garden and landscape architecture
  • Flood protection and erosion control
  • Drainage solutions

Natural geotextiles are made from renewable materials such as yarns spun from jute, linen, hemp or TENCEL™ fibres. These textiles break down naturally in the soil without leaving harmful residues. This degradation occurs under normal environmental conditions, not just through industrial composting.

From natural geotextile to synthetic and back again

Before the rise of synthetic raw materials such as polypropylene and polyester, geotextiles were typically already made from natural materials.

In recent decades synthetic materials have largely taken their place. With today’s knowledge there is renewed interest in alternative raw materials. At Zwartz we work closely with partners to research the potential for reintroducing natural materials.

A sustainable made‑in‑the‑Netherlands alternative

Natural geotextiles offer a strong, environmentally friendly and biodegradable alternative. By using natural fibres, we create robust fabrics suitable for applications such as:

  • Temporary roadways
  • Dike and erosion protection
  • Green zones and landscaping
  • Soil and ground cover

The key advantage of these geotextiles: they decompose fully in nature without leaving harmful residues.

The qualities of natural geotextiles

The requirements for geotextile vary by project. That is why at Zwartz we have developed a range of qualities, including:

  • Very lightweight open leno-weave constructions starting at 30 g/m²
  • Heavily woven natural fabrics up to 950 g/m²

Our fabrics are available in widths up to 535 cm, but we also produce custom widths tailored to specific project needs.

With our in-house production facility in Oldenzaal, we can respond quickly to specific requirements and work with clients to develop solutions that meet both technical and ecological standards.

Zwartz: Tradition, craftsmanship and innovation since 1835

What sets Zwartz apart is nearly two centuries of experience in processing natural fibres. Since 1835, we have been producing high-quality fabrics from jute, linen, hemp and other natural materials.

The development of natural geotextile is a logical next step where tradition, innovation and sustainability come together. In doing so, we contribute to environmentally responsible solutions for ground, water and road construction.

Frequently asked questions about natural geotextiles

What is the difference between natural and synthetic geotextile?
Natural geotextile is made from biodegradable materials such as jute linen hemp or TENCEL™. Synthetic geotextile consists of plastics such as polypropylene or polyester. Natural textiles break down fully in the soil without leaving harmful residues.

What applications are suitable for natural geotextile?
Natural geotextile is used for temporary roadways dike and erosion control landscaping ground cover and garden architecture. It is especially suitable for situations where a temporary solution is desired that naturally decomposes.

Is natural geotextile just as strong as synthetic geotextile?
Strength varies by quality. At Zwartz we produce a range from light open constructions to heavy woven fabrics with high tensile strength. There is a strong natural option for most applications.

Does natural geotextile decompose on its own?
Yes. Zwartz’s geotextiles are fully biodegradable under natural conditions. That means they degrade without leaving harmful residues.

Can Zwartz develop geotextile to customer specifications?
Yes. With our production facility in Oldenzaal we can quickly meet specific demands. We adapt or develop fabrics based on the technical and environmental requirements of the project.
