Hotmelt Lamination for Flexible Industrial Applications

Hotmelt lamination is a versatile process for creating durable and precise bonds between material layers. At Zwartz, we use our state-of-the-art hotmelt system for a wide range of applications – from technical textiles and automotive to construction materials and industrial tapes. By combining a gravure roller with a multi-roll setup, we achieve maximum flexibility without compromising efficiency or quality.

What is Hotmelt Lamination?

In hotmelt lamination, a thermoplastic or reactive adhesive is heated until it becomes liquid and then applied to a substrate. The material layers are joined immediately afterwards, creating a strong and durable bond once the adhesive cools.

At Zwartz, we work with two main types of hotmelt adhesives, depending on the technical requirements of your application:

  • Thermoplastic hotmelt: Bonds upon cooling and can be reactivated. Suitable for applications where flexibility and adjustability are required.

  • Reactive hotmelt: Forms a chemical bond with the substrate. This provides a permanent adhesion resistant to moisture, heat, and mechanical stress – ideal for demanding environments.

Hotmelt Techniques at Zwartz

Depending on the adhesive type and the intended use, we apply different techniques that influence both the function and appearance of the laminate:

  • Dot coating: for breathable laminates with precise adhesive placement

  • Full-surface coating: for complete adhesive coverage where uniformity is required

  • Roll-to-roll lamination: continuous production for large, consistent volumes

  • Roll-to-sheet lamination: flexibility for producing custom-sized sheets

  • Thermoplastic hotmelt lamination: strong, durable bonding with thermoplastic adhesive

  • Reactive hotmelt lamination: for maximum bond strength and durability

We are happy to advise you on which technique best suits your product and production process. With our experience and testing capabilities, we quickly find the right solution.

Applications of Hotmelt Lamination

The Zwartz hotmelt system is suitable for a wide variety of industrial applications, including:

  • Technical textiles: protective layers, breathable membranes, or filters

  • Mobility and transport: interior components, tapes, or covering materials

  • Construction: roofing underlays, self-adhesive films, moisture barriers

  • Functional and industrial clothing: breathable or protective textile layers

  • Tapes and labels: self-adhesive solutions with consistent adhesive distribution

  • Paper products: with barrier or anti-slip coatings

Products Made with Hotmelt Technology

Our hotmelt system is used for producing, among others:

  • Membrane films with dot coating: breathable and waterproof

  • Anti-slip textiles: for applications where grip is essential

  • Self-adhesive tapes: with tailor-made adhesive coverage

  • Paper with barrier coating: for added durability and moisture resistance

Hotmelt Lamination at Zwartz

Our hotmelt line processes widths up to 2500 mm and is designed to switch quickly between different materials. This allows us to handle both large production runs and smaller custom projects efficiently.

With our technical expertise and modern production lines, we can respond quickly, support you in the development phase, and deliver exactly what is needed. Whether it is a new product or an optimization of an existing laminate, we provide solutions that work reliably in your process.

Contract Lamination at Zwartz

In addition to full-service projects, Zwartz also offers contract lamination. You supply your own materials, and we take care of the complete lamination process – from small test runs to large-scale production. This is a practical solution for companies that want to remain flexible without investing in additional machines or capacity. Zwartz can support you with temporary production peaks, specialized applications, or as an extension of your own production.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hotmelt Lamination

What is the difference between thermoplastic and reactive hotmelt?

Thermoplastic hotmelt bonds when cooling and can be reactivated. Reactive hotmelt forms a chemical bond and provides stronger, permanent adhesion.

For breathable membranes, tapes, protective layers, construction films, and more. The process is widely used in technical and industrial contexts.

Our hotmelt system processes materials up to 2500 mm wide.
